Hardwired Smoke Alarms Installation

Did you know that in Perth, about three-quarters of all home fire deaths occur in homes that don’t have smoke alarms installed? Almost half of those deaths occurred when the occupants were asleep. Working smoke alarms save lives as well as reducing likely resident/tenant injuries and property damage from house fires. Hardwired Smoke Alarms are an inexpensive exercise and vital for peace of mind.

  • All ionisation smoke alarms should be replaced as soon as possible. They should be replaced with photoelectric type smoke alarms.
  • Smoke alarms must be located on each level of your home.
  • Smoke alarms must be located outside each bedroom. (Normally in a passageway adjacent to a bedroom)

Smoke alarms detect the smoke particles from a fire. There are two common types:

  • A photoelectric smoke alarm, which uses a beam of light and a light sensor. When smoke particles affect the amount of light reaching the sensor, an alarm will sound.
  • An ionisation smoke alarm, which monitors the ions (electrically charged particles). When the electrical balance of the air is altered by the smoke particles, the alarm will sound.

Why install a ceiling fan?

Ceiling Fans are a cost effective way to cool your home. On a hot humid summer’s day a ceiling fan can make the room feel up to 5 degrees cooler. When compared to Air Conditioning a ceiling fan uses substantially less electricity and is, therefore, better for the environment. The running costs on an average ceiling fan are less than 3 cents per hour.

I already have an air conditioner. Should I still install a ceiling fan?

A ceiling fan will help to make an air conditioner more efficient. You can increase the temperature setting a couple of degrees without any noticeable change in comfort. This will help to reduce your electricity bill. In fact, on the majority of days, you won’t have to run your air conditioner at all!

We can install a ceiling fan in just about any room of your home. When you work with us, we’ll recommend the right ceiling fan based on your room’s size and layout, all the while sticking to the budget you set. Whether you’re looking to replace a current fan or install one from scratch, our team is up to the task.

Get the air moving in your home with a new ceiling fan

Safety Switch RCD Tripping

Safety Switches

Safety switches are designed to minimise the chance of person receiving a fatal electric shock. Many Perth homes either don’t have a safety switch at all or if they do, then it only protects the power circuits. It is recommended that a safety switch is fitted to each individual circuit in your home, including all power point, light, pool, air conditioning, oven and hot water circuits. The easiest way to see what level of protection you have is to go to your switchboard and push the “T” test button on all of your switches. Anything that will still operate when the safety switches are all in the “off” position is not protected by a safety switch.

How does a RCD safety switch work?

safety switch rcd
safety switch rcd

A safety switch is another name for a Residual Current Device (RCD). A safety switch monitors the flow of electricity in a circuit. Under normal circumstances, the amount of electrical current that flows to an appliance from the switchboard via the active conductor should be equal to the amount of electrical current that returns to the switchboard from the appliance via the neutral conductor. When someone receives an electric shock, electricity will flow through their body to the ground causing the flow of electricity in the circuit to become out of balance. When the current in a circuit becomes out of balance a safety switch will switch off the supply of electricity in as little as 30 milliseconds (0.03 seconds).

What is the difference between a RCD and a circuit breaker?

A safety switch should not be confused with a circuit breaker. An RCD will have a test “T” button on it. Circuit breakers are designed to protect the electrical wiring and appliances in your home in the event of an overload or a short circuit. They will not protect you from being electrocuted.

How do I test my safety switch?

It is recommended that you test to see if your safety-switch is operating correctly every 3 months. An easy way to remember is if you do this each time you receive your quarterly power bill. To do this you simply go to your switchboard and push the test “T” button on each safety switch. The safety switch should trip instantaneously. To reset the switch push the lever back up into the on position. On some safety switches, you will have to rotate the lever clockwise to turn it back on.

My RCD is tripping. What shall I do?

If your safety switches trips you should have the circuits tested by an electrician to ensure that they are safe. RCD’s will trip for a variety of reasons including excess moisture, mechanical damage to cables and appliances, poor cable insulation, and damage resulting from rodents like rats. Having a safety switch is not an excuse to do your own electrical wiring. Any electrical wiring should always be done by a licensed electrician at all times.

If you are not sure if your home is fully protected or your safety RCD switch is tripping please contact us to arrange an inspection.

Why are LED downlights better?

Significantly less risk of fire: Halogen downlights operate at high temperatures and when not installed correctly can present a significant risk of fire. LED downlights run at low temperatures making them a much safer alternative.

Increased Lifespan

: LED downlights have an average manufacturer reported lifespan of up to 30,000 hours – That’s over 15 years with normal use! Your average halogen lamp will last for about 1000 hours.

Improved energy efficiency: LED downlights can reduce your lighting bill by up to 82%. An average 9 watt LED light will produce about the same amount of light as a 50 watt halogen.

More options when it comes to the colour of the light: LED downlights can dramatically change the look and feel of your home. Older style halogen and incandescent lights give off a yellowish hue that can make the room feel gloomy. Thankfully LED’s come in a wide range of colours and can produce a much more inviting crisper look.

More environmentally friendly: Since LEDs use much less energy and do not contain any mercury they help to reduce carbon emissions and are a better choice for the environment.

How much could I save?

Based on an average home with 25 lights you can expect to save up to $546 a year by converting your 50-watt halogen fittings into 11 watt energy efficient LED downlights. That’s an average saving of $21.85 p.a for every light that’s running for 6 hours per night.

Electrical Condition Report:

expert-service-plumbing-electrical-albion-park-2527-accreditation

WHAT IS A ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION CONDITION REPORT?

Electrical Safety First (a charity who’s goal is to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by electrical accidents) list 5 aims for An Electrical Installation Condition Report:

  1. Make a record of the results of the electrical inspection and to make sure your electrics are safe to be used until the next inspection (following any work needed to make it safe)
  2. Find any damage that may affect the system and make a record of the damage.
  3. Find any parts of the electrical installation that do not meet the IET Wiring Regulations
  4. Identify anything that may cause electric shocks.
  5. Provide a record of  your electrical system at the time of the inspection.

The important thing to remember is that having an EICR report done is the first part of  the exercise, the second part is to fix any problems that are found in the report.

WHAT IS AN ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION CONDITION REPORT FOR?

A Electrical Installation Condition Report is not a certificate to say that your building is safe. It is a report that highlights all the potential problems points with your electrical installation.

The responsibility is then with you the homeowner or landlord to ensure that any problems that are identified are fixed.

THE DETAILS

There are 2 different types of electrical condition report:

  • There is a visual inspection – no electrical testing is done and this is only appropriate if your electrics have been tested recently (in the past year)
  • A periodic inspection report – this is when they test the electrics in you building and will report on any  damage and anything that needs fixing

Dead Testing

  1. Continuity testing: This tests will identify if any of your conductors are badly connected.
  2. Insulation resistance testing: This checks the insulation surrounding your wiring and fittings to ensure its not damaged or degraded.
  3. Polarity: This is testing the connection between the phase and the neutral and the other between the phase and the earth (usually performed on all sockets)

Live Testing

  1. Earth loop testing:  This essentially tests if a fault occurs does the system disconnect (is your fuze box is working)
  2. RCD testing: An RCD is a protective device used to automatically disconnect the electrical supply when an imbalance is detected between live conductors.

WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION CONDITION REPORT

When your report is complete your electrician will present you the finding of the report, everything that has been tested and any problems that have been found. They will usually give you a quote and a time frame for fixing the problems that they have found.

Please be aware that there are several cases of business owners being sued because they have had EICR reports down and then failed to correct the problems found, staff and customers were subsequently injured. So its important once you get the results of the report make sure you have everything fixed.

Whoever conducts your report you should ask them for a full quotation to fix the necessary problems before you agree to it. This will avoid any surprises when the invoice comes.

WHO CAN DO A ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION CONDITION REPORT FOR YOU

You can get any registered electrician to perform and electrical condition report on your property to this generally means any NICEIC or NAPIT qualified electrician. To find one in your area just search on Google.
